Ultrafiltration membrane, a microporous filtration membrane with a uniform pore size specification and a rated pore size range of 0.001-0.02 microns. By applying appropriate pressure on one side of the membrane, solute molecules smaller than the pore size can be sieved out to separate particles with molecular weights greater than 500 Daltons (atomic mass unit) and particle sizes greater than 10 nanometers. Ultrafiltration membranes were one of the first polymer separation membranes to be developed, and ultrafiltration devices were industrialized in the 1960s.
